Ponderings from Sam Moore
Reverend Samuel H. Moore, Jr. D.Min., District Superintendent
Happy New Year,
I was participating in worship on Sunday morning. The church that I was worshipping with celebrated the Lord’s baptism and allowed worshippers to renew our baptism. It was very meaningful, and it reminded me of my experiences of planning and leading worship on the first Sunday after Epiphany. I also was reminded that all of us are called to the general ministry of the church. This calling comes to us in our baptisms. We are gifted by God, called by God, equipped by God through the church, sent us to minister in the name of Jesus.
I believe that it is good news that God gives us grace so that we may cooperate with God and grow into the people God is calling us to become. We may accept God’s forgiveness of our sins. We may forgive ourselves and those who have sinned against us. We also have the opportunity to allow the Holy Spirit to transform us to follow Jesus more faithfully. We may remember that God loves all of God’s children, and we may use the means of grace so that we may better love God and our neighbors. When I participate in the Baptism of Jesus and renew my baptismal vows, I remember that I am a work in progress. I also remember that all of us are works in progress. God continues to work on us. We continue to grow into the children of God who love God with all of our being and our neighbors as we love ourselves. As we remember our baptisms, we remember that God is with us and that God continues to pour God’s transforming grace on us.
God invites us to participate in the mission of the church. The mission is to grow as disciples of Jesus and to work with God so that God may use us to help others grow into faithful disciples of Jesus. I suggest that you go to the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church website, www.wnccumc.org, to learn of additional training so that you may grow in your discipleship. Your pastors need you to be hungry for more of God and want to join your pastors in the work you need to accomplish in your community. Discipleship and following Jesus are not spectators’ activities. I invite you to go to wnccumc.org to register for the leadership training that is occurring this week. If you have missed some, no problem, recordings will be placed on the website to use later.
I pray that your family, your members, the communities in which your churches are located, and you have a safe and prosperous New Year.
